John Proud Dutchy Horn

John Proud Dutchy HornThis horn is patterned after one in a rural New York Historical Society's collection. George Herder served in the Revolutionary War and Claverack is located in New York's Hudson River valley. The town's history goes back to the Dutch settlement period. The horn's decoration is a interesting combination of "Dutchy" themes ( hearts and flowers) and what I consider Native American themes (a turtle carapace? and wampum?). Then add the Christian theme of the fish! A lot of well thought out and displayed symbolism, along with an owners name, location and date. The original horn had a plain low domed base plug. I chose to add a chip carved design in the "Dutchy" tradition.Photo by Jan Riser

Beautiful horn. Wondering about the Pa Dutch & German fraktur influence and language on horns. Are there original horn with German script?
